    Key Takeaways

    • Vitalik Buterin compared Ethereum’s 2023 roadmap to the new 2029 Strawmap on Monday.
    • Quantum safety and strong privacy tools now rank among Ethereum’s top upgrade priorities.
    • AI-assisted formal verification and native rollups are new additions since 2023.

On Monday, Buterin posted a side-by-side comparison of his 2023 Ethereum roadmap and the Ethereum Foundation’s new “Strawmap,” a planning document outlining protocol upgrades through 2029.

    Quantum Safety Jumps the Line

Buterin explained that most of the roadmap still lines up with the original Strawmap, but some items moved up in order. Quantum safety, the effort to protect Ethereum from future quantum computers capable of breaking current cryptography, jumped ahead of other upgrades.

Other items were dropped, including verifiable delay functions and a range of planned Ethereum Virtual Machine improvements. The EVM is the software that runs smart contracts.

Older Designs Give Way to Newer Ones

Some plans were swapped for what Buterin called superior designs. Verkle trees, once meant to help nodes store less data, gave way to newer proposals. A plan to let old account data expire was replaced by new state types, a different way of organizing how the network tracks balances and activity.

    notion

Privacy and Quantum Defense Take Center Stage

What stands out most, Buterin said, are additions that were not part of his 2023 thinking at all. Strong privacy protections now sit near the top, including tools like keyed nonces and shielded transaction pools. Post-quantum scaling work, built around new signature and aggregation methods, also made the list.

AI Tools Push Formal Verification Forward

Buterin pointed to formal verification, the process of mathematically proving code behaves as intended, as a major driver behind the shift. He said it is only becoming possible at scale because of AI tools, pushing the Ethereum (ETH) protocol toward a leaner, more provable design.

Rollups and Futures Markets Join the Plan

Two additions reflect how far zero-knowledge proof technology has advanced since 2023. Native rollups, a way to run scaling layers directly inside Ethereum’s base protocol, were not realistic three years ago because the cryptographic tools were not mature enough. Blob and gas futures, a market-based way to price network resources in advance, did not exist as a concept back then.

Buterin also raised the possibility that Ethereum could eventually expose a simpler instruction set to developers, with candidates like leanISA and RISC-V under discussion. He said that idea remains too early even for the Strawmap.

Why It Matters for Users and Developers

For everyday users, the changes point toward a network built to resist censorship and quantum attacks while giving people more control over what transaction data stays public. For developers and investors, the Strawmap signals where Ethereum Foundation engineering work will go over the next several years.

Buterin summed up the goal directly. Ethereum will be quantum safe, will prioritize user privacy, will remain secure and censorship resistant, and will scale while staying lean, he stressed.

    What to Watch Next

Ethereum participants and onlookers should watch for specific Strawmap items moving through Ethereum’s standard proposal process, along with any timeline details the Ethereum Foundation releases for quantum safety, alongside security and privacy protection features in the coming months.
