    Key Takeaways

    • Chinese prosecutors seek 61,896 bitcoin worth approximately $5.1 billion held by British authorities.

    • Qian Zhimin’s investment fraud collected more than $5.7 billion before her arrest and conviction.

    • Britain’s High Court ruled Chinese law governs victims’ ownership claims to the seized bitcoin.

China Targets $5.1B Bitcoin Fortune Seized by British Police

A fortune of nearly 62,000 bitcoin, seized by British police from a convicted Chinese fraudster, is now at the center of an international fight over billions of dollars. Chinese prosecutors want the cryptocurrency returned through confiscation proceedings, while British courts are determining whether victims have enforceable ownership claims.

The bitcoin (BTC), worth approximately $5.1 billion at recent prices, originated from an enormous investment scheme that defrauded more than 100,000 people. Neither country has secured a final legal victory over the assets.

China Moves to Recover Billions in Seized Bitcoin

The Tianjin No. 2 Intermediate People’s Court accepted a confiscation application Sept. 28 targeting assets linked to Qian Zhimin, also known as Yadi Zhang, according to a report by Chinese publication The Paper. Prosecutors identified precisely 61,896.41552945 BTC alongside bitcoin cash (BCH), XRP, dogecoin (DOGE), cash, jewelry, and other property. Much of the cryptocurrency remains under British control.

Qian operated a fraudulent investment operation between 2014 and 2017 that collected more than 40.38 billion yuan, approximately $5.7 billion, from Chinese investors. The scheme promised protected principal and generous returns while diverting money into cryptocurrency and luxury purchases. After fleeing China, Qian eventually reached Britain, where police seized her cryptocurrency holdings in 2018. She received an 11-year, eight-month prison sentence in November 2025.

British Court Ruling Complicates Ownership Fight

As reported by Bitcoin.com News, an October ruling by Britain’s High Court determined that Chinese law governs whether fraud victims possess ownership rights to the confiscated bitcoin. That distinction matters enormously. Victims must establish legally recognized property interests rather than simply demonstrate that they lost money.

Chinese prosecutors are pursuing confiscation and victim restitution, but their application doesn’t automatically transfer cryptocurrency from British custody. A six-month public notice period allows affected parties to participate in China’s proceedings.

British authorities have their own ambitions for the bitcoin fortune. The Crown Prosecution Service is pursuing civil recovery proceedings that would allow the U.K. government to retain the assets if victims cannot establish ownership rights.

The Financial Times reported that Treasury officials privately discussed using the multibillion-dollar windfall to help address Britain’s strained public finances. A proposed compensation arrangement for victims could still leave the British state holding much of the bitcoin’s appreciated value, although final ownership remains unresolved.

The central question is increasingly difficult to ignore: If victims cannot establish ownership, then who ultimately receives billions in bitcoin that appreciated dramatically after the original fraud?
