Pioneering Bitcoin Investor Shifts to Pessimistic Outlook, Cautions BTC May Be Vulnerable to Complete Collapse

Tech investor Chamath Palihapitiya, once a loud Bitcoin bull, now says the asset is capped and will eventually be hacked and fall to zero.

    TL;DR

    • He cites a limited pool of buyers, security risks from leaked ownership data, and AI-driven attacks on cryptography.
    • He says he no longer holds crypto directly, having swapped his bitcoin for equity in Digital Currency Group.
    • BTC trades near $81,500, roughly 26% below its level a year ago.

    A Prominent Bull Changes Sides

Few voices in tech investing carry the reach of Palihapitiya, the Social Capital founder who co-hosts the All-In Podcast with David Sacks, David Friedberg and Jason Calacanis. Speaking on the Moonshots podcast with Peter Diamandis, he described bitcoin as a dead end: limited in how far it can climb, and ultimately vulnerable to a hack that sends it to nothing.

The reversal is stark. In December 2017 he forecast $100,000 per coin by around 2020, a target bitcoin needed four extra years to hit. He later floated $1 million by 2040, pitching the asset as protection against currency debasement and geopolitical turmoil. He has also said he bought as early as 2010.

Palihapitiya sees bitcoin’s buyers arriving in layers: retail first, then institutions, then central banks. He argues retail-held coins lack the fungibility sovereign buyers would want, since a central bank would not welcome reserves that anyone can trace. Ray Dalio has raised a similar objection. If that last buyer class never shows up, he reasons, upside is limited.

AI and Security Risks Create Easy Targets

He also pointed to security risks from exposed ownership information, referring to a recent run of crypto thefts and kidnappings in France. He claimed the French government pushed for publication of who holds what, a claim worth verifying independently. His broader point is that visible wealth turns holders into targets.

The boldest warning involves artificial intelligence. If self-improving AI systems were aimed at cryptographic attacks, he suggested, the obvious first prize would be the wallet tied to Satoshi Nakamoto: break SHA-256, drain the coins, short the market, then announce it, profiting twice.

He added that moving bitcoin to a quantum-resistant design is close to impossible because the community cannot agree on basic coordination, and said crypto has lost its way on the issue.

    Why The Comments Carry Weight

Palihapitiya’s proximity to the Trump White House adds extra attention. He is close friends with Sacks, the former White House crypto and AI czar who still co-chairs the president’s council of advisers. Quantum anxiety has also surged over the past year, boosted by Google’s computing breakthroughs in March and a wave of AI-powered cyberattacks. Developers have proposed defenses, but skeptics doubt decentralized networks can adapt quickly enough.

His own exit is part of the story. He says his bitcoin was sold to Digital Currency Group in exchange for equity, which spared him storage and security headaches while keeping crypto exposure.

    The Bottom Line

Palihapitiya’s warning is an opinion with no timeline, not a forecast backed by new evidence. It still feeds a growing debate over quantum resistance and AI-era security, and it shows how quickly early believers can change their minds.
