    Key Takeaways

    • Michael Saylor said rejecting bitcoin integration with banks and markets denies it to 99% of users.
    • Strategy holds 843,775 BTC worth about $55 billion, below its $75,482 average cost per coin.
    • Citi and Morgan Stanley are building out bitcoin custody rails in 2026, backing Saylor’s integration case.

Saylor Makes the Case for Bitcoin in the Banking System

Saylor, the chairman of the largest corporate holder of bitcoin, used his X account to make an argument he has repeated in various forms since Strategy began accumulating bitcoin in 2020, i.e. bitcoin’s long-term value depends on plugging into the existing financial system rather than standing outside it. He posted:

“To reject Bitcoin’s integration with banks and corporations, custodians and exchanges, equity and credit markets, governments and currencies is to deny its benefits to 99% of the world and doom it to 1% of its potential.”

The comment did not name a specific event or policy. Instead, it reads as a broad philosophical position Saylor has staked out repeatedly this year, arguing that bitcoin’s usefulness scales with how deeply it is woven into banking, credit and government systems rather than kept apart from them as a purely peer-to-peer asset.

What Bank Integration Looks Like Right Now

Saylor’s argument lines up with a real shift already underway among major US banks. Citigroup announced in February that it plans to launch an institutional-grade bitcoin custody service in 2026, and Citi and Morgan Stanley have both moved to expand custody, trading and tokenization efforts for digital assets this year.

Citi’s plan, in particular, would let institutional clients manage bitcoin holdings inside the same safekeeping account used for stocks and bonds, with unified reporting and cross-margining between digital and traditional assets. That is the kind of infrastructure Saylor points to when he talks about banks, custodians and exchanges.

Strategy’s Own Bet Shows the Risk

Strategy is the clearest test case for Saylor’s argument, and the numbers prove that. For starters, the company holds 843,775 BTC bought for a total of $63.69 billion, an average cost of $75,482 per coin. At current prices, that stack is worth roughly $55 billion, meaning Strategy is sitting on a paper loss relative to its own buy-in even as it remains the largest corporate bitcoin holder by a wide margin.

Saylor has continued signaling more purchases despite the drawdown. On July 26, he posted Strategy’s bitcoin acquisition chart with the message “we’re gonna need another color,” a hint the company may need to add a new shade to its chart legend after another large buy, a pattern the company has repeated through past drawdowns rather than trimming its position.

Strategy has also been shifting how it talks about that stack because rather than framing bitcoin purely as a reserve asset to be accumulated indefinitely, the company has increasingly positioned its holdings as collateral behind financial products like its STRC preferred stock, which Saylor has said is targeting a private credit market worth more than $3.5 trillion.
